AWA Vienna, an international community of English-speaking women, has approximately 250 members from over 40 countries. We are interesting, enthusiastic, energetic and fun. AWA is a non-profit volunteer organization financed primarily by membership dues.
Our purpose is to provide opportunities for English-speaking women to make friends and support each other as they adapt to life in Austria. We offer social activities and cultural programs, and are also involved in community work and charitable fundraising.
AWA has expanded its membership to welcome international women and their families. We are part of an active network of local and international organizations, including the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas. FAWCO's membership spans six continents and represents the interests of more than 15,000 women living abroad.
Our Beginnings
The American Women's Association of Vienna was founded in 1924 by American diplomatic and military wives. During World War II, AWA was inactive and the Association's book collection was donated to the University of Vienna. After the war, American Embassy and military wives organized the Children's Friendship Fund, which used the proceeds from their thrift shop to help Austrian children. When the economic situation in Austria improved, the thrift shop was closed. In 1961, AWA became active again, with a membership of about 60 women. The Children's Friendship Fund was dissolved in 1967, and AWA took over its charitable functions.
In 1931, members of AWA Vienna attended the founding of the Federation of American Women's Clubs in London. In 1933 and 1991, AWA Vienna hosted FAWCO international conferences.
