Meet Our Members: Tova Marr

My name is Tova Marr and I am a Canadian. I have lived in Vienna for over 16 years: the first
stint was for 4 years living with my parents here in the 90s.

I wasn’t a fan of the city then so that meant, of course, that I would end up meeting an Austrian a few years later and moving back in 2004 after our elopement in Niagara Falls in January, in Canada, with snow. Years later, I am now smitten with the city and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

While Vienna is incredible for public transportation, affordable alcohol and incredible architecture, there is one thing that has proven to be a struggle: autism support. In 2014, our wonderful son Raphael was diagnosed with autism and it became very apparent that there was little information available, no real community and just a lack of basic services.

After struggling for two years to find a therapist and support, I decided to start a Facebook page called Autism in Vienna - Beacon Beach House. A year later the page has over 1,000 likes! Autism in Vienna is also now officially a Verein and I am hoping by the fall of 2017, to have an actual location comprised of co-sharing therapy rooms, a playroom and a coffee shop so that people with autism can have the opportunity to work. Currently I am hosting parent nights, therapy networking evenings and planning different events and in January we will be having our first official fundraiser. I plan to take a nap in 2019.

While the Verein is definitely my passion, I also work full time. If I am not at work, meeting friends, or chasing after my son, I also write about my life in my blog Operation Tubetop. I love my life here in this incredible city and am lucky to have so much support from so many fabulous AWA ladies.

While recently I have not been able to attend as many AWA events as I would have liked, my New Year’s resolution is to attend many more in the New Year. So I hope to meet you ladies soon- I will be there, clutching a glass of wine while Instagramming it.
